My lover.

I Miss You

I miss you
My lover
My heart
My joy

I set sail on the wide blue ocean
With dark thoughts and deep emotions
I did not know what lay beneath the layers of my skin
A heart beating with blood and oxygen, keeping my soul alive

As the boat rose and crashed with the waves I knew that this adventure was one for the taking
The horizon was far far away, wrapping my heart in longing
And then a bird came to me, from beneath the sun’s rays

A white bird with blue specks and a lavender chest
Breathing deeply as its wings beat strong and true
Flying directly towards me
I did not waver and set my eyes upon the eyes of the bird

This bird flew straight into my chest
And nestled its beautiful body and soul in my heart
I felt alive
More alive than I had ever felt in my life

The bird told me many things
About its life and its long journey to the boat
I was moved within, moved more than the rocking of the boat
The ocean was calm and awake

The bird guided me along the waves
Showing me places within and without
The ocean became my friend
Through the trust I shared with this beautiful little bird

Nestling inside my heart, my soul grew warm
I became a new man, I brought energy forth which I did not know was there
Belief and love became a habit
It was a dream

So many days spent rocking along the spray
Many joys under the sun I shared with my newfound soul
Many storms were weathered under a shining moon
Crossing paths with the bird

And one day, a storm set us under its power
The bird and I kept sailing, with the moon to guide us
I became afraid
As the waves become larger I knew the boat was going to give way

Crashing and thrashing
Tossing and turning
Yearning and churning
The ocean displayed its natural life

As I began to drown, I let the bird free
Flying away through the rain and thunder
It looked back but once, as I lifted my gaze
Love was what we shared

A plank took me to shore
As I stood up ragged, hungry, and sopping wet with ocean sweat
I then realized
The ocean’s plan

A gift and nothing more
Love is mercy
Love is guidance
Love is a journey

I met this mercy with what I had
As I beg life to show me a new strength
Building another boat
This one stronger and more determined

To meet the waves of the ocean
The hot sun and salty spray
Allow me the strength life
To walk another path, back into the fray

The boat is my heart
The man upon it is my soul
And the little bird that changed my course
Is you my lover

Setting me free and chaining me down
Life has many things in store for those who chance to take it
I miss you
I miss you

I pray to love again

  1. This poem inspired me to write one, not as beautiful, but one that made me realize where the ocean’s stormy sea left me.
All my life has been drained out of me.
I have been left sad and broken.
My boat has been dashed to pieces, and I left a lonely wanderer.
All there is left to do is cut all my long, beautiful hair off,
and toss my gems into the ocean.
To cast my pretty white dress and golden necklace off my body.
You, my love, have left me here.
You let go of my heart in the midst of the ocean storm,
and my heart has been dashed to pieces on these rocks.
My lover sails forth and sends me messages of love,
    bundles of sweetgrass and yarrow,
and a bough of a flowering bush.
You, my love, have sent me necklaces I have no need for,
while you leave me here on these cold rocks with waterlogged and wilted sweetgrass.
Meanwhile, the ocean rages all around, and pelts me with her fierce spray.
What are precious metals when they rust from saltwater?
What are messages of love when you leave me stranded and sail further away?
    How can you smile
when you see me naked on these cold, jagged rocks?
    How can you stay
    so far away?
So I cast off all vestiges of love from my body.
The jewels and dresses are gone.
And I become what I am,
    naked and alone.
But the ocean’s friend once more.
