Where next?

I see no system that can be devised that will compensate or circumvent human immorality, irresponsibility, abuse, and neglect. So, where do peace and prosperity lie? Is there a basic testament of morality humankind can arrive to without the aid of the divine? It seems to me that our future depends greatly upon this question. And quite possibly, it will accompany the downfall of Western civilization as it stands today. For it does not seem that we will be able to answer this question in a way that will maintain the order of our current societal, economic, and political structures.

  1. I think you would love the book “A Conflict of Visions” by Thomas Sowell. He explains why the short answer to your question is probably “no”, but the good news is that the conflict behind the short answer has been around a very long time, and Western Civilization has endured.

  2. To address human immorality, irresponsibility, abuse, and neglect you have to decide if they exists because of good or bad systems, or that they exist regardless of how good or bad the systems are. Dictators decide they are smart or knowledgeable enough that they can eradicate immorality, but they often end up deciding what immorality is or is not based on self interest. Where the systems are constrained, such as where powers are divided and self determination is allowed, the free market of ideas gets to make decisions on both systems and morality. Individuals decide if Mohammad, Jesus, Moa, etc. brings truth or not. One system prospers and the other does not, except where they co-opt unconstrained arrangements (i.e. free markets) to cash in. Just my thoughts. Here you are free to take them or leave them.
